According to a ranking done by Maclean’s “Canada’s Best Communities ranking, Whitby was ranked highest amongst the other municipalities in Durham Region.
The magazine ranked 415 communities across Canada and Whitby came in as the top Durham Region community with a 55th place showing. Ajax was second at 66, followed by Clarington at 96.
Uxbridge was 145, two places in front of Pickering at 147, while Oshawa placed 179, Scugog 197 and Brock Township 297.
The magazine ranked communities based on data from several categories, including tax rates, population growth, crime, health care access, housing affordability and unemployment rates.
Whitby was noted for its amenities, culture and community, and its weather.
Amenities used for scoring included the presence of a college or university being nearby, and proximity to a movie theatre, bars and restaurants.
Culture and community scoring was derived from the percentage of residents working in the arts, culture, recreation and the community's involvement in those activities.
Clarington achieved a good ranking in the categories of demographics, amenities and their low crime rate.
The Demographics scoring was based on the community's five-year population growth. Crime scoring was based on a five-year average of the crime severity index for the police service covering each community.
Ajax's top three features were amenities, demographics and weather.
Culture and community, the weather and a low crime rate were Uxbridge's top three features.
Pickering was noted for it's amenities, weather and crime rate, while Oshawa's top three were amenities, weather and demographics.
Culture and community, crime and health were Scugog's top three.
Brock was noted for its crime, taxes and culture and community.
